C. Richard Chapman, PhD

Richard Chapman, a psychologist, is a Professor in Anesthesiology. He has engaged in research on pain and related subjects for more than 40 years. This work includes psychophysical and psychophysiological research on human subjects as well as clinical studies on cancer related pain, chronic pain and acute pain. Enduring themes in his research across the decades include measurement of pain, the nature of suffering, multivariate approaches to study design and data analysis, opioid pharmacotherapy, and a systems approach to mind-body issues.

Dr. Chapman’s current interests focus on acute pain. He is engaged in an international collaboration that has designed and implemented Pain-Out, an international registry for postoperative pain, under the auspices of the International Association for the Study of Pain. Other recent studies have focused on modeling postoperative pain as a trajectory. At the University of Utah he is part of a quality improvement project that is introducing a novel, patient-centered approach to assessing postoperative pain.
