Director, Center for Health Outcomes and Population Equity (HOPE)

Senior Director for Cancer Health Equity Science at HCI

Associate Director for Practice Engagement and Translation at CTSI

David W. Wetter, Ph.D., is the Jon M. and Karen Huntsman Presidential Professor, Director of the Center for Health Outcomes and Population Equity (HOPE), Senior Director for Cancer Health Equity Science, and Associate Director for Practice Engagement and Translation at the Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute at the University of Utah and Huntsman Cancer Institute. His work is targeted at promoting health equity in cancer and chronic disease through translational research. Specific research foci include: theoretical models of health risk behaviors; the development and evaluation of theoretically-based interventions; and, translational research to implement and disseminate those interventions in real world settings. His research focuses on populations that have been historically marginalized, with a major focus on low socioeconomic status, rural/frontier, and diverse groups.

Dr. Wetter has an extensive NIH-funded grant portfolio of over 25 years and almost 300 peer-reviewed publications. His research program has received awards from the Society of Behavioral Medicine, American Society for Preventive Oncology, Society for Health Psychology, and AstraZeneca/Scientific American.

Over the past 25 years, Dr. Wetter has been the primary mentor for ~35 postdoctoral scholars, many of whom are now in major leadership roles at academic institutions across the country. He has served as the primary mentor for 16 funded, NIH/American Cancer Society Career Development awards, and he received the Robert M. Chamberlain Distinguished Mentor Award (out of a faculty of 1,600) and the inaugural Leading Mentor in Cancer Prevention Award (out of a faculty of 80) while at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.

Research Statement

Dr. Wetter’s work is targeted at eliminating health inequities through translational research. Specific research foci include: theoretical models of addictive and cancer risk behaviors; the development and evaluation of theoretically-based interventions; and, translational research to implement and disseminate those interventions in real world settings. His research focuses on high-risk and historically marginalized populations, with a major focus on low socioeconomic status individuals, racial/ethnic minorities, and rural/frontier populations.
