Hans Haecker, MD, PhD, is Professor in the Department of Pathology, Division of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Utah. He is currently also serving as the director of the Basic Immunology course and as Co-Chair of the Department Advisory Committee (DAC). He is Co-Founder and Board Member of Nanospot.ai. He is also member of the Cell Response and Regulation program within the Huntsman Cancer Institute and member in the Center for Iron & Heme Disorders (CIHD) at the University of Utah.

Dr. Haecker received is MD from the University of Ulm and his PhD and MD board certification from the Technical University Munich/ Germany. While there, he explored how innate immune cells recognize and respond to pathogenic DNA. He then moved on to a postdoctoral work in the laboratory of Dr. Michael Karin at the University of San Diego, California, where he studied the signaling pathways used by Toll-like receptors (TLRs) and their role in inflammation and host protection. He then joined the faculty of the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, where he expanded his work on TLR signaling towards different inflammation/ autoimmune disease models, blood cell development (myelopoiesis) and drug discovery. After 13+ years at St. Jude, he moved to the University of Utah, where he joined the faculty of the Department of Pathology, Division of Microbiology & Immunology. Here, he continues with his previous work, with the addition of the role of the microbiota in inflammatory diseases and the development of innovative point-of-care diagnostics, which is also the basis of the startup company Nanospot.ai.

The major focus of the Haecker lab is on innate immunity/ inflammation and inflammatory/ autoimmune diseases, such as systemic lupus erythematosus and psoriasis. While many clinical aspects of these devastating diseases are known, major aspects related to their etiology (providing the basis for therapeutics development) remain uncertain. Those aspects include molecular mechanisms of signaling pathways, cell differentiation programs of involved immune cells and, likely, the participation of the microbiota. Exploring such underlying mechanisms and translating discoveries into novel therapeutic approaches is a major goal of the Haecker lab.
