Oncological Sciences

About Us

Established in 1994, the Department of Oncological Sciences performs research and provides training with an emphasis in cancer biology. This department is strongly aligned with Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI) at the University of Utah, whose mission is to discover the origins of human cancer as well as develop new diagnostics and treatments.

Our department brings together a community of faculty, students, and staff, who work with approximately 60 graduate students and 20 post-doctoral fellows, in research laboratories. We award PhD degrees in cancer biology, with specialized training in transcriptional regulation and epigenetics, animal models of cancer, and cancer cell biology, including apoptosis, metabolism, and signaling.

Headtlove Essel Dadzie

I grew up in the southern part of Ghana and moved to the United States for graduate school. I am currently a PhD candidate in Oncological Sciences at the University of Utah’s Huntsman Cancer Institute in the Snyder Lab. My research focuses on understanding how the transcription factor HNF4A drives the lineage identity switch in invasive mucinous adenocarcinoma, which is a unique subtype of lung adenocarcinoma with a poor prognosis. Outside the lab, I enjoy hosting friends, trying new baking recipes, and occasionally hiking the beautiful mountains of Utah. A fun fact about me is that I enjoy bringing humor into my daily work, especially when I am around people I know well.
