Rotation Dates

Due to an increased interest in emergency medicine, all students must stay within the rotation time periods outlined on the Student Affairs website (4 weeks for 7610).

Textbooks

We recommend Hamilton's Emergency Medicine: An Approach to Clinical Problem Solving. Textbooks may be checked out for the duration of the rotation.

Dress Code

Scrubs and white coats are appropriate attire during the rotation. We provide gray scrubs that can be signed out for the rotation. We require the scrubs to be washed before being returned at the end of the rotation. Student identification must be clearly displayed at all times in the emergency department. Jeans, sweats, T-shirts, shorts, and sandals should not be worn while working in the ED.

Visiting Students

The Office of Student Affairs in the Dean's Office will be accepting applications via VSLO only. All portions of the application must be complete for your application to be processed: transcript, board scores (Step 1), letter of interest (this is not your personal statement), background check, and a 5 panel drug test. Please note that recently the school of medicine has made our EM sub-I rotation a part of the core curriculum for all 4th year Utah med students, which means we will be obligated to take many more Utah students going into other specialties. This means our ability to take visiting students will be very limited.

Notification of Acceptance

Once your complete application has been received by Student Affairs, it is sent to the division of emergency medicine via VSAS for approval. The division requires a letter of interest. Once you have been approved for the rotation, Student Affairs will send you an official letter of acceptance. Emergency Medicine will contact you regarding the specifics of your rotation (where to go on the first day, your schedule, etc.)

Housing

Housing needs to be arranged by the student.

Parking

On-campus parking is to be arranged by the student. Parking Passes can be purchased at the Parking Services Office. There is also an excellent public transportation system (UTA) featuring both bus and light rail with stops in front of the emergency department.
