MD Program Research Council

The MD Program Research Council brings together medical students interested in research and scholarship across SFESOM. The Council helps strengthen the medical student research community by connecting students with research opportunities, resources, mentorship, events, and ways to get involved.

Whether you are just beginning to explore research or are already actively involved in a project, the Research Council provides a space to connect with peers, engage with the research community, and help shape research opportunities for medical students.

The Research Council is led by medical students representing different stages of the MD program and a variety of research interests. Council leaders serve as a peer resource for students, help identify research needs and opportunities, and work with the Office of Medical Student Research Education to strengthen the research experience across SFESOM.

    Get Involved with the Research Council

    Be Part of the Medical Student Research Community

    The Research Council offers opportunities for medical students to become involved in the research community beyond their individual projects. Students may participate in research events, peer support, student outreach, research programming, and other initiatives throughout the academic year.

    Opportunities to get involved are shared throughout the year, and students at all levels of research experience are encouraged to participate.

    Connect with Students Who Have Been Through the Process

    Navigating research can sometimes be easier with support from someone who has been through the process. Research Council members can help students navigate common questions related to finding opportunities, connecting with mentors, getting started with a project, preparing presentations, and identifying available research resources.

    Peer support is available to students at all stages of their research journey, whether they are exploring research for the first time or looking for guidance as they move an existing project forward.


    Finding & Working with a Research Mentor

    Building a Successful Mentoring Relationship

    Finding the right mentor is an important part of developing a meaningful research experience. Students are encouraged to connect with faculty whose research interests align with their own goals and to have an open conversation about expectations, availability, project responsibilities, and potential scholarly outcomes before committing to a project.

    Some funded research programs require students to work with mentors who meet specific program or grant requirements. Students interested in these opportunities should review the applicable approved mentor list when identifying potential faculty mentors.
