
NIEHS Hazwoper Training
The P2R Consortium for Hazardous Waste Worker Training (P2R) is a partnership between the University of Texas School of Public Health's Southwest Center for Occupational and Environmental Health and the University of Utah's Rocky Mountain Center for Occupational and Environmental Health, currently known as the Prevention, Preparedness, and Response (P2R) Academy. The P2R Academy offers hazardous materials worker training and a HazMat Leadership Academy designed for current or aspiring managers and leaders.
Hazwoper Courses (Online and In-person)
Hazwoper Train the Trainer (Hybrid) Certificate, 40 Hours, 4.0 CEU's ($495)
The course will provide a basic overview and understanding of the content of Hazwoper training courses including the 40-hour, 8-hour refresher and First Responder Operations level courses. Students will gain enough knowledge to teach these courses with the appropriate level of preparation before each class.
The course will provide content to deliver the following learning objectives:
- Provide an overview of the history of Hazwoper and the Safety and Environmental acts leading to the standard.
- Establish an understanding of hazardous materials concepts principles and properties.
- Create an understanding of the standards components and how each fits into the risk management process at a waste clean up or emergency response site.
- Provide a solid understanding of the primary tools used to interpret and understand hazardous materials and how to use these tools during the assessment process.
- Provide students with examples of practical scenarios that bring key course components together in a practical manner stressing teamwork, patience, resource use and a focus on investigative skills.

Our 24 hour hazwoper course will teach you how to protect yourself and stay safe, even if you have limited exposure to hazardous substances, under permissible exposure limits (PELs). The course gives you a though understanding of OSHA standard 29 CFR 1910.120(e)(3).
If you work with hazardous materials that are above permissible exposure limits, you are required to take the 40 hour course. Please take the 32-hour hazwoper course and contact racheltbrown@hsc.utah.edu to schedule for the hands-on portion.

The 40 Hour Hazwoper Hybrid is 32 hours online and 8 hours in-person for the hands on/skills portion. Please take the Online 32-hour Hazwoper prior to the hands on/skills portion of the course.

Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, up to 4 hours, 0.4 CEU's ($49)
In addition to hazardous waste management, the course explores the RCRA framework for non-hazardous solid waste managmenet, proving insight into sustainable waste practices. Designed for environmental professionals, compliance officers, and industry stakeholders, this course equips learners with the knowledge to navigate the complexities of waste management and contribute to environmental conservation efforts.
Upon completion of this course, participants will be well-versed in the legal and operational aspects of RCRA, enabling them to implement effective waste management strategies and uphold the standards set by the EPA.

Biological and Infectious Agent Health and Safety in Emerging Technologies (BioSTET), up to 6 hours, 0.6 CEU's
This course will explore the fundamentals of developing a site health and safety plan that includes provisions for biological safety. This course educates people about disaster preparedness and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations.
