Pathways of Excellence and Graduate Certificates

What are they?

Pathways and graduate certificates provide students the opportunity to explore domains in healthcare, as well as major initiatives happening within the larger health system. They were designed to help distinguish graduates of the Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine by highlighting areas which represent key strengths of our institution, such as:

Benefits of exploration

Physicians need skills beyond clinical care

  • Most physicians will take on leadership roles during their career
  • Hospitals with more highly rated boards of directors have been shown to deliver higher quality care and have better clinical outcomes
  • Stronger leadership associated with less physician burnout and higher satisfaction

Benefit to you as a student

  • Connect with mentors
  • Work on specialized projects
  • Explore your professional interests
  • Distinguish yourself in the residency application process

How does it work?

Pathways and graduate certificates entail electives taken throughout a student’s time in medical school. The number of courses and credits required will vary based on each Pathway, with certificates offering more courses and a deeper dive into a topic. Each Pathway and certificate will require a combination of elective coursework, assessment of knowledge and skills, completion of a project, and capstone exercise.

Pathway objectives

Although each pathway will have their individual objectives, the general objectives for the Pathways program are:

  1. Provide opportunities for deeper learning in important domains in healthcare
  2. Connect students to faculty and projects within the larger healthcare system at UUH
  3. Promote professional direction for students and help them become more attractive to residency programs
