OUR MISSION
EVEREST is designed to:
- Connect research programs across the School of Medicine in a unified Office of Research Education
- Integrate research throughout the medical curriculum, from foundational coursework to scholarly capstones.
- Strengthen Utah's physician-scientist workforce through innovative research experiences that address the needs of all.
- Integrate urban, rural, and underserved communities, explore their needs and perform research to find tailored solutions.

EVEREST creates a unified research education ecosystem where every medical student has the opportunity to develop as clinician, scholar and scientist.
The initiative brings together existing research programs under one coordinated framework while expanding opportunities for mentorship, discovery, and community engagement.

Why EVEREST?
Research That Grows With You
EVEREST is a longitudinal research education initiative about the Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine (SFESOM) that integrated research throughout all four years of medical school. We continue to support foundational discovery from bench to bedside and expand by combining foundational science with health research such as urban, rural and underserved communities.
EVEREST prepares future physicians to:
- Improve healthcare and outcomes across Utah and beyond.
- Conduct research to address the healthcare needs of all.
- Contribute to the development of medical technologies and new treatment options.

Choose Your Trail
Three Specialized Pathways
Following foundational research training, students may pursue one of three specialized research pathways:
Discovery TRAIL
Focuses on laboratory-based and translational research utilizing molecular, cellular, and genomic science to advance medical discovery.
Population Health TRAIL
Engages student in health equity, implementation science, and community-based participatory research serving urban and rural populations
Underserved TRAIL
Provides immersive research experiences addressing rural and tribal health through partnerships across Utah and the Mountain West, including telehealth and community-engaged research.

EVEREST is designed to remove barriers to research participation. Supporting students and mentors with:
- Student research scholarships

Measuring Success
The Office of Research Education will track outcomes including the following:
